Fitted with its original Van Den Plas 4-seater "Bathtub" Tourer Body, this car represents the archetypal vintage racing Bentley, fore-runner of the famous Speed Six Bentley and the "Blower" 4.5 litre.Designed as a result of W. O. Bentley's racing experience before the Great War and incorporating ideas developed during wartime aeronautical research, this nineteen twenties car has twin carburetors, overhead camshaft. cross flow head, 4 valves per cylinder and twin spark ignition - nothing is new.
No wonder Bentley won Le Mans five times ! !
This car was featured in the Bentley video, "Best of British" and in 1997 completed a thousand mile tour of Western France, taking part in the 70th Anniversary Celebrations of the famous 1927 Bentley Le Mans Victory. XW is 76 years old this year and was originally owned by Sir B. C. Baychamps and, in the fifties, by Bomb Command Officers and Members of the R.A.F. Motor Club. It has been driven at Le Mans and Silverstone.
Recently returned from the U.S.A. - a trip of 3,075 miles in temperatures of up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit in California, Nevada and Arizona. XW 1604 is regularly used and is kept ready for the road every day of the year and has been used as wedding transport, for moving furniture and even for taking a load of hedge trimmings to the tip !
